Release number 1572 of 12/10/2004:
Designated Towns of Culture of the Veneto Region, 2004 Venice,
October the 12th: Pieve di Cadore (Belluno), Piove di
Sacco (Padova) and Mira (Venice) are the 'Towns of Culture of
the Veneto Region' for the year 2004. The nomination of the
winning towns for the fourth edition of the regional competition
which awards 20 000 Euros to the best cultural events projects
presented by a non- provincial capital, was made public by the
Regional Councillor for Culture and Veneto Regional Identity,
Ermanno Serrajotto. The prize, as Serrajotto himself underlines,
was intended by the region as a sign of respect for, and support
of, the work of local authorities in organising cultural events
concentrating above all on the promotion of the area's cultural
identity. Since last year's competition some changes have been
made to the award which is now given to three equally- ranked
winners representing three town size categories: towns with
fewer than 10 000 inhabitants and those with upto and over 25
000 inhabitants respectively. The Evaluating Committee, presided
over by the Regional Secretary for Culture, is made up of those
responsible for managing the cultural departments of the 7 provincial
governments. There were 52 contestants this year. "The increased
level of participation" Serrajotto continues, " is a sign that
the Region's initiative has met a need amongst local councils.
Last year 40 towns took part. In the category involving towns
with fewer than 10 000 inhabitants, 28 towns took part whilst
in those concerning towns with fewer than and more than 25 000
inhabitants, the number of participating towns was 17 and 7
respectively". The Committee evaluated the overall cultural
relevance of the various projects and the total investment in
the cultural sector, in relation to the number of inhabitants
of each town that these involved. Pieve di Cadore was the winner
in the smallest town size category for the wealth and variety
of the proposals put forward, proposals which enhance the artistic
and historical heritage of the town via a series of initiatives
ranging across all cultural sectors and involving many organisations
and individuals. For the second category, Piove di Sacco was
awarded the prize for the strong links between its cultural
initiatives and the historical- cultural heritage of the town
which emphasised the role of historically significant local
individuals, and for the involvement of the town's schools in
the initiatives. Mira was given the third category award on
the basis of the breadth and high quality of its initiatives,
particularly those relating to performance arts, ranging across
all areas of cultural activity and involving town-building plans
(Eco Museum, Planetarium). Each award consists of 20 000 Euros
and a trophy, designed by the architect Francesco Lucianetti
which will be handed over by Councillor Serrajotto at official
ceremonies in the three winning towns.
Issued by the Press Office of the Veneto Region.
